Moving Company Ranks Illinois 49th in Nation for Moving Residents | Granite City News

According to a moving company, Illinois once again witnessed one of the largest net losses of one-way moving trucks leaving the state.

In the latest U-Haul Growth Index for 2021, Illinois is ranked 49th in the country for the second year in a row, behind California. The index determines growth by calculating the net gain of one-way trucks entering the state over leaving over a calendar year.

Illinois has been in 49th or 50th place on the index since 2015.

Many Illinois residents have made their way to the sandy beaches of Florida, where Mario Martinez is U-Haul’s regional vice president. He said Florida did not force business closures during the pandemic like Illinois did.

“In the last couple of years we’ve been pretty much open all the time,” Martinez said. “This state has continued and this has been a very busy year throughout the day.”

Florida came behind Texas as the top growth state in 2021, followed by Tennessee, South Carolina, and Arizona. Neighbor from Illinois, Indiana, was 6th.

“We see a lot of people coming from Chicago markets,” said Matt Merrill, district vice president for Dallas Forth Worth Metroplex and West Texas. “I think a lot of this is due to the growth in jobs and the many opportunities here. The cost of living here is much lower than in these areas.

According to the latest figures from the US Census Bureau, from July 2020 to July 2021, there were 113,776 fewer people in Illinois. Only the District of Columbia and New York have experienced a greater percentage of population decline.

Considering the number of births and migrants who have moved to Illinois, it is estimated that more than 122,000 Illinois have moved to other states.
